The thermal detonator is a grenade and has the same function as a grenade from other games. It is a charge of explosives that detonates a couple seconds after it is thrown. The difference between a thermal detonator and a grenade is that it uses thermal energy to generate the explosion.
Due to gravity, when throwing a detonator, you will more than likely have to aim just above your target. Sometimes thermal detonators can grip onto a surface after hitting it, before explosion. Otherwise, they will roll until stopped by friction, and then detonate. Although not usually the most damaging explosive in the games, they are very useful and do enough damage for their purpose.
