TIE fighters were starfighters that looked like H's. Since TIE's don't have any shields, they are highly suseptable to a critical hit anywhere on the ship giving them a short life span. But they are able to make it up in there number as they a mass produced by the Galactic Empire. They are designated "TIE" for their Twin Ion Engine propulsion system.

TIE fighters do not have internal life support, so the pilot's carry their own.
