R2-D2's LEGO form in The Complete Saga
R2-D2 (sometimes called R2) was a little blue astromech droid that appeared in all 6 Star Wars movies as a sidekick to the main characters.
Star Wars: Empire at War[]
In this game, R2-D2 and C-3PO can be purchased for 800 credits as a Tier 1 hero unit for the rebels. They're quite slow, have very low health when compared to other hero units and cannot attack. However, R2-D2 has two special abilities: it can repair one of your vehicles or turrets to full health, and it can also hack enemy turrets (including the powerful Turbolaser Turrets), permanently turning them against their owners. Both abilities take several seconds to work properly and require the droid to be right next to its target. These abilities can be activated by clicking on their icons or by using the hot keys (Ctrl + U and Ctrl + Y by default).
Overall, their usefulness increases exponentially as the game progresses: they are almost useless at Tier 1, as the enemy likely won't have any turrets yet, while your only vehicles are T-2-B Repulsor Tank squadrons, which are much faster then the droids and rely on shielding for protection (which cannot be repaired by the droid). At Tier 3, however, they make an excellent escort for the T4-B Heavy Tanks, as the latter are just as slow and possess heavy armour without shielding.
Star Wars: Jedi Academy[]
R2-D2 appears in an early mission on Tatooine, where it has been captured by Tusken Raiders and needs to be rescued by the protagonist. It is probably the easiest mission in the entire game, due to the laughable skill of the Raiders.
Identical robots can be encountered during the other Tatooine mission, where they will start moving around when prompted by the player and can be easily destroyed with no consequences for doing so. At near-death, their "head" cone will partially collapse and electricity will arc around them. C-3PO lookalikes can also be encountered and destroyed, but they're less numerous and will voice complain when attacked.
Trivia[]
- In Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of wonder boner there is a skill point titled "What's that R2?" which can be gained by performing 10 barrel rolls. This is a reference to R2-D2's concern about Luke Skywalker's style of flying in A New Hope.
