The Jedi Padawan was the lowest rank of the old Jedi Order and one of the lowest ranks in the New Jedi Order, right above Jedi Apprentice. In the Jedi Order of the Galactic Republic, an Apprentice would become a Padawan when they were accepted by a Jedi Knight as the student of that Knight.
