A mind trick, often called a Jedi mind trick, was a Force power used mostly by the Jedi as a way of avoiding unnecessary confrontation or to have enemies commit friendly fire. By using the Force, they could influence the actions of other "weak-minded" sentient beings. One sinister variation of the power was "Force Corruption", an ability that would force targets to the user's side, while slowly draining their life.

The Quermian Jedi Master Yarael Poof was one of the most famous users of mind tricks before his death in 27 BBY.

Force Persuasion[]

Hutts, Toydarians, Yinchorri, Kloodavians, Dashade, Falleen, Geonosians, and possibly Snivvians could resist this ability. For example, Revan could persuade Motta the Hutt, but Luke Skywalker failed in his attempt to persuade Jabba the Hutt. Also during the Jedi Civil War, some soldiers were trained to resist Mind Trick. There were other variants of this such as affect mind and dominate mind.

Jedi using mind trick[]

When using a Jedi Mind Trick the Jedi would casually wave his hand and take a peculiar tone of voice. The sentient being that was the object of the mind trick would usually also after being mind tricked have a casual voice tone. Should the trick succeed, he or she then agreed to whatever was being said to them without being able to think for themselves. Somewhat later, they would be slightly puzzled about what they had just done though usually they would dismiss the thought.

Force Fear[]

"Terror is a cancer, devouring the mind from within. Strength, hope, and wisdom are nothing but thoughts to be consumed."
—Unidentified dark-sider

Force fear was a dark side Force power and possibly a dark side variant on the Jedi mind trick, used around 4,000 BBY by Sith. The user would use this to make total terror through his deepest fears. Through pure force of will alone, a user could cause the victim to lose his courage completely, and if left undefended, the effects could be severe, rapidly demoralizing the enemy with a feeling of hopelessness and regret. Depending on the victim, it would caused them to either cower defenselessly or flee from their opponent outright.

Force fear had two advanced variants: Force horror and Force insanity. Force horror enabled the Force user to cause multiple enemies to enter into a crazed state of panic that was more severe and more difficult to defend than the basic Force fear. In similarity, Force insanity also enabled the Force user to affect multiple enemies at once, although to an even greater range than Force horror. As the most advanced form of Force fear, its effect was much more devastating, with the victim possibly descending into an utter state of frenzied madness and deranged craziness as their situation seemed to suddenly become utterly helpless.
