The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, formerly known as the Imperator-class Star Destroyer was the staple capital ship of the Imperial Navy for the better part of the Galactic Civil War. It was a dagger-shaped ship that was recognized throughout the galaxy as a symbol of the Empire's might.
The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer became a symbol of fear used by the Empire to subjugate their planets to Imperial law. They were later replaced by the nearly identical Imperial II-class Star Destroyers, which featured upgraded shield and weapons systems and a stronger hull.

They serve as the capital ships for the Empire in Star Wars: Battlefront II.
In Star Wars: Empire at War, Imperial-I class Star Destroyers are the most powerful ships an Imperial player can obtain. They are heavily armed and armored, and each Star Destroyer houses 10 squadrons of TIE Fighters and 5 squadrons of TIE Bombers. An Imperial Star Destroyer is also equipped with a tractor beam, which can be used to immobilize smaller ships and make them easier to destroy.
Although powerful, they are not unstoppable. The biggest threat to a Star Destroyer are squadrons of Y-Wings that attempt to take out its hardpoints. Unlike its Rebel counterpart, the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser, the Star Destroyer's shield generators are able to be taken out. Without their powerful shields, they can be easily destroyed, if not backed up properly. Also, the hangar can also be destroyed, which removes the ability to launch replacement TIE Fighters/Bombers. The tractor beam is also linked to a hardpoint, which can be destroyed, removing the Star Destroyer's special ability.
